Better Call Saul – Even better than Breaking Bad?

I just finished the final episode of this superb show. Bob Odenkirk has long been a hero of mine (since the Mr Show days) and he puts in a remarkable performance in this intelligent, clever, creative series. His onscreen partner, Rhea Seehorn, is outstanding any time she is onscreen. In addition to the gifted performers (shout out to Tony Dalton as one of the most charismatic tv villains ever), this show is anchored in gorgeous cinematography, precise brilliant writing, and real craft. This is a creative team at the peak of their powers.

The show took its time with everything in the best possible way. It allowed for deep, careful studies of people as they wove their way through a strange underworld. This was particularly engaging when you consider how difficult it is to create tension and stakes in a show where we know the fate of the majority of the characters (thanks to Breaking Bad). It also has some of the niftiest use of timeline jumps in a tv show, that actually pay homage to the original series’ characters, while always moving its own story along.

A prequel/spinoff show rarely ignites the imagination, but this show is the rare case of surpassing its source material in many ways. Of course, it couldn’t really exist without the other, but it stands alone as a brilliant piece of art. One day, maybe soon, I hope to rewatch Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad chronologically and marvel once more. If you haven’t seen it yet, then do yourself a massive favour. It’s Saul Goodman!
